Greetings long time listeners,
Sketch has grown tired of my tirades on timelines and box office gross numbers so I've come here to the G.O.C.O. Briefing Room to talk about Justice League. Full disclosure, we loved both Thor: Ragnorok and Justice League, but there has been a methodological smear campaign to discredit the Justice League movie while at the same time holding up Ragnorok as the feel good movie of the year. Lets sample just a few of the gems shall we: "Justice League is a Failure Across The Board" - The Ringer; "This Headline Won't Make Justice League Any Better" - Huffington Post; "Justice League Is Like A Chocolate Chip Cookie with Cockroach Chunks" - Mashable... really Mashable? So, lets forget all of that sound and fury and just talk numbers! A "box office bomb" or "flop" is a film that is considered highly unsuccessful or unprofitable during its theatrical run, often following significant hype regarding its cost, production, or marketing efforts. Fact: Thor Ragnorok earned a unimaginable $833,156,064 internationally, which for a stand-alone Thor movie or any movie is beyond impressive. Justice League on the other hand has earned $613,360,371 internationally. So come with me long time listeners and let's look deeper shall we? Marvel/Disney's Thor: Ragnorok cost approx. $180 million and opened at #1 in the box office internationally on October 25, 2017. It has been in theaters for 5.4 weeks (38 days). Ragnorok made 40% of its gross on opening weekend. Domestically the movie has $301.1 million and $532 million internationally. Now let us turn our attention to the, "cockroach chunks"...Up yours Mashable! Fact: Justice League cost approx $300 million and opened on November 13, 2017 reaching #1 at the box office. Following a similar staggered releases schedule internationally with its most recent being November 30, 2017 in Lebanon (I'll be very surprised if anyone in Lebanon goes to see it at this point) Warner's Justice League has spent 3.4 weeks (24 days) in theaters, and made 44% of its gross on opening weekend. Domestically the superfriends have earned $212.6 million (34.6% of gross) and $401.3 million internationally (65.4% of gross). It is clear that the real success of Thor was its marketing and media campaign, and it is here that Warner/D.C. will need to step up it's game. Warner does not have to re-invent the wheel here. Disney has laid out a clear path to generating hype, and how to build momentum through international release. Imitation is the highest form of compliment, just look at 90% of Marvel's Character Stable...Mr. Fantastic is just Elongated Man! Disney is the master of marketing. When we look at the films side by side both Thor: Ragnorok and Justice League look beautiful (minus Henry Cadaver's upper lip). For my money Justice League's effects look far superior, and they should be at almost double the production price tag, but that's not taking anything away from Thor, which looks equally stunning in different and nuanced ways. Thor: Ragnorok is a success by any definition, but so too is Justice League. Its a great time to be a geek, and I would love it if we could simply stop for one moment and celebrated the fact that the two highest grossing films of Q4 2017 are proudly letting their Geek-Flags fly.
